IELTS SPEAKING- Tips & Tricks

Both the paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS speaking test is divided into three parts. So first, understand the structure.

IELTS Speaking Structure

Part 1: This is an interactive part where the IELTS examiner will speak with you for 4 to 5 minutes about yourself. In addition, you have to introduce yourself, about your work, family members, home life, personal interests, etc.

Part 2: Here, you are given a topic and have a minute to take notes on the asked subject. A pencil and a paper will be provided for your response and have to speak on the topic for about two minutes.

Part 3: Furthermore, this is a follow-up portion of Part-2 where you have to interact with the IELTS examiner for 4 to 5 minutes relating to the topic you described in part 2.

On the day of the IELTS speaking test, many test-takers are worried. You’ll be more confident and well-prepared on test day thanks to our IELTS speaking tips and tactics.

Improve your IELTS Speaking- Tips and Tricks

Don’t memorize answers

Especially in part1, don’t memorize answers as memorized language doesn’t give the examiner an accurate measure of your English language.

Avoid using big and unfamiliar words

Using unfamiliar words might impress the examiner but there is a high chance of making mistakes by mispronouncing words or using them in the wrong context.

Use a range of grammatical structure

While giving your IELTS speaking, focus on your:

  1. Fluency and Coherence
  2. Lexical resource
  3. Grammatical range and accuracy
  4. Pronunciation

Don’t worry about your accent

When giving a face-to-face Speaking test, the examiner understands a wide range of accents, so he or she will comprehend what you say during the speaking examination. As long as you communicate effectively, there is nothing to worry about.

Pause to think

There’s no harm in pausing for a moment to consider what you’re about to say. Also, during the Speaking test, you can employ words that allow you time to ponder. The following are a few useful phrases:

  1. That’s an interesting question
  2. I have never thought about that but,
  3. Let me see
  4. That’s a good point
  5. Let me think about that for a minute

Avoid using fillers

Fillers are used when you don’t know what to say and at that moment examiner will catch you when you can’t access the appropriate language. So, speak with confidence and avoid using fillers.

Some of the filler’s words are Like, You Know, Umm…, Ahh…, Ehh…, Well, etc.

Extend your answers

When your answer is short, the examiner might think you can’t talk in detail about a topic. Also, extend your answer and don’t give a chance to the examiner to prompt you with a question.

Smiling helps pronunciation

Smiling will help you relax, which will aid in better pronunciation. To clarify, enunciate clearly by opening your mouth wide enough for the sound to come out clearly.

Don’t speak in a monotone

When we speak, we can make a flat, monotone sound with little variety. This makes it more difficult to explain yourself and for the listener to figure out which portions of the message are most relevant.

Practice common IELTS topics

Part 2 requires you to speak for around 2 minutes. So, try talking about popular topics with friends and family to increase your speaking skills and vocabulary. Some of the common topics are:

  1. Tourism and travel
  2. Education
  3. Transport
  4. Environment
  5. Family Life
  6. Sports
  7. Crime and Punishment
  8. The Internet
  9. Advertising and Retail

Ask the question again if you need to

If you need something clarified, don’t be afraid to ask. You will not lose points if you beg for a pardon. For e.g.; “Could you please rephrase the question?”

Make a good first impression

It’s important to look nice, smell good, and feel well. Have faith in yourself. Although it may not appear to be significant, a positive first impression can go a long way.

Don’t act like a test, make it casual
